This is part of an NBCC Visions series introducing board certified counselors to NBCC employees and their work. Lori Young is the Cash Receipts Analyst at NBCC and Affiliates.
When did you begin working with NBCC, and how did you arrive?
I started with NBCC in 2014, after I moved to Greensboro from Houston, Texas, to be near my son and his family. I had been looking for a job for some time and finally received a call from NBCC to set up an interview. The interview was postponed several times due to the worst winter weather—ice, snow, and everything in between! We finally had the first interview and then agreed on a second interview—again the weather hit Greensboro and caused a postponement. However, after we had the second interview, I was on my way home when NBCC called offering me the job. Becky Frankenfeld said my start date would be April 1st. I was just ecstatic!
Then after a while I started to think “Wait—April 1st?” So I called Becky back and asked, “Is this going to be an April Fool’s joke? I arrive at work my first day and there is no job?” There was nothing but laughter on the line! So I had already made quite the name for myself. But now it has almost been six years. What an honor and privilege!
What is your role with NBCC?
I started out as a cash receipts clerk—reviewing and processing all payments to individual accounts—for NBCC, CCE, and ATCB. I was promoted to Accounts Payable, which handles the processing of all NBCC expenses. I then changed positions to Cash Receipts Analyst, where I am now. I monitor all incoming payment transactions for NBCC and CCE and reconcile those transactions to ensure that NBCC receives the funds. I also handle all incoming transactions for our clients, ATCB and ATTUD.
What do you enjoy about your work with NBCC?
I love what I do at NBCC. My job is never dull—it has a routine, but each day also brings challenges, opportunities, and diversification. Combined with interaction with our clients and my coworkers, there’s never any boredom!
What are your interests outside of NBCC?
First and foremost, I enjoy time with my family. I am deeply involved with my church and I attend Bible Study Fellowship. I am committed to volunteering by serving those in need either through my church or NBCC activities. I love to read and, crazy as it may seem, to quilt. And I am drawn to anything that sparkles!
Who is someone you look up to in the field and why?
While at NBCC, I have met two amazing women who inspire me: Nikki Yannone and Andrea Tiganus. Both women are always open and caring with no judgment or criticism, and both display tremendous strength in the face of difficult situations and challenges. Both stay true to their ethics and morals, not allowing others to sway them.
