Federal Agency Resources for Counselors



In support of counselor research, NBCC offers external websites to help conduct research and gather valuable information. These resources may provide insights and data relevant to the research counselor's conduct.

National Board for Certified Counselors

The Professional Counselor

The Professional Counselor (TPC) is the official journal of the National Board for Certified Counselors, Inc. and Affiliates (NBCC), dedicated to publishing original and innovative peer-reviewed research and scholarship in an electronic, open-access format to inform counselors and members of related helping professions.

Government Resources

Congressional Research Service

The Congressional Research Service (CRS) works for the U.S. Congress, including congressional committees and members of Congress, providing legislative and research analysis. As a legislative branch agency within the Library of Congress, CRS provides analysis that is “authoritative, confidential, objective and nonpartisan.”

DATA.GOV

DATA.GOV shares government open datasets and dataset collections to assist the public and policymakers in finding data, tools, and resources to conduct research.

Freedom of Information Act

The Freedom of Information Act allows the public the right to request access to records from federal agencies. This site details the FOIA process and can help with creating an FOIA request.

Government Accountability Office

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) is an independent agency that provides the U.S. Congress, the heads of executive agencies, and the public with nonpartisan information. GAO also provides oversight of federal spending and operations and produces reports on a variety of topics.

Library of Congress

The Library of Congress collection includes millions of cataloged books and other print materials and the world's largest collection of legal materials. The Library of Congress provides support to researchers who have exhausted their local and regional library resources. Researchers can also visit the Library of Congress’s reading rooms and research centers in person.

National Archives

The National Archives is a collection of historic U.S. files, including photos, military records, guides and indexes to federal information, and other government documents and publications. In addition to its website, researchers can visit its museum in Washington, D.C., and other federal records centers and presidential libraries across the country.

The National Institute of Mental Health Data Archive

The National Institute of Mental Health Data Archive (NDA) is a combined database and information-sharing platform featuring data from hundreds of U.S. scientific research projects, including mental health–related studies. NDA research summaries are accessible to researchers via permission groups for broad use, open access, and controlled access.

National Institutes of Health Research & Training

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Research & Training page offers a variety of information, including NIH research resources; other U.S. library, medical, and clinical research resources; training opportunities; and links to government science and technology websites and technical publications.

National Institute of Mental Health

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), a division of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is a U.S. federal agency that conducts and funds basic and clinical mental health research. Its online resources include links to research guides and lists, data-sharing platforms, regulatory details, and other information about behavioral and social sciences.

PubMed Central

PubMed Central (PMC) is a free digital archive of more than 10 million scientific journal articles compiled from hundreds of years of research. PMC is part of the U.S. National Institutes of Health’s National Library of Medicine.

Research.gov

This site, which is part of the National Science Foundation, features an index of funding opportunities for research, including grants and fellowships from the federal government, along with scholarly publications and training resources.

Science.gov

This government website allows researchers to search multiple federal agencies at once, providing access to millions of results from scientific studies funded by the federal government. It includes peer-reviewed journal articles, technical reports, conference presentations, information about U.S. policies and initiatives related to the open access of scientific information, and more.

The Federal Register

This searchable journal of the U.S. government is updated daily and shares links to publications from federal agencies, including presidential documents, important notices, proposed rules, and information on a variety of topics including health and public welfare, science and technology, the environment, and more. It also provides opportunities to offer input on government programs.

USAspending.gov

This open data source tracks and reports federal spending, including loans and grants; budgets; and other information on Medicare, Social Security, and national defense; and is searchable by industry, location, and recipient.

U.S. Government Publishing Office

This federal legislative agency website provides free access to government publications and includes handouts, tutorials, and other resources for finding information.

U.S. Census

Every 10 years (most recently in 2020) the U.S. Census Bureau conducts a count of the country’s residents to determine federal funding for communities, seats in state legislatures and the U.S. House of Representatives, and other uses. Researchers can find a variety of facts and figures by state, county, and city.
