Early Application Process

The Student Application Process

Becoming certified is an important step in your development as a professional counselor. If you are a student in a participating program, you have a unique opportunity to begin the application process prior to graduation. Note that you cannot identify yourself as certified or use the certification mark until you graduate and satisfy all requirements. NBCC provides official written notification of your completion of requirements. For details, please review the requirements, information about the NCE or the NCMHCE, and benefits of board certification. You may also want to review a list of examination preparation guides.

Benefits of Applying as a Student

NBCC has created a special process that offers a number of benefits to those who start the application before they graduate:

  • You will get an early start on the NCC application process.

  • You will be able to take the exam while your coursework is still recent.

  • You will be guided through the process by a campus coordinator at your university.

  • As long as you complete the application process, the exam score that you receive for certification can later be submitted to your state licensure board. Please refer to the NBCC Test Score Release Policy for more information.

Getting Started

The student application process begins with your campus coordinator. They will have detailed information on how to apply as a graduate student. If your school does not have a campus coordinator, email campusinquiry@nbcc.org.
