NBCC remains committed to a strong and active advocacy effort on behalf of our certificants and the counseling profession as a whole.
Although health care reform legislation recently passed Congress without language providing Medicare recognition for counselors, we continue to work aggressively toward inclusion through all relevant health care vehicles.
Over the past few years, the counseling profession has been keenly aware of the growing mental health needs of servicemembers returning from combat, as well as the increased stress on military families. These problems are exacerbated by the increasing length and frequency of deployments. The result has been skyrocketing suicide and homicide rates and accelerating rates of spousal and child abuse. We, as a nation, have a moral obligation to provide our servicemen and women with the best possible health/mental health care and treatment. To address these serious problems, NBCC continues to advocate for the completion of qualification standards allowing counselors to serve our veterans and to pursue legislation authorizing counselors to independently treat servicemembers and their families through TRICARE and the Department of Defense.
It is your help and support that will allow us to succeed in these important efforts.
