Reps. John Katko (R-NY-24) and Grace Napolitano (D-CA-32) have introduced legislation to increase access to counselors and other mental health professionals and address the shortage of behavioral health professionals in rural and underserved areas.
H.R. 6597, the Mental Health Professionals Workforce Shortage Loan Repayment Act of 2018, provides loan repayment services to mental health counselors and other behavioral health professionals who agree to work in a mental health professional shortage area for six years. Rep. Katko is the sponsor of counselor Medicare legislation, and the two representatives co-chair the Congressional Mental Health Caucus. NBCC encourages board certified counselors to contact their legislators in support of this bill.
