Status Changes

NCCs have several status options. The forms to request a change in status are linked below along with the purpose and parameters of each status. NBCC will not change the status of an NCC without the submission of the appropriate form. The only exception to this is that NBCC will inactivate the certification of any NCC who fails to complete the requirements to recertify at the end of a certification cycle.

Reinstatement Information and Application for Lapsed NCCs
You do NOT have to reapply in order to reinstate your NBCC certification(s).  Before you submit a request to reactivate your certification, contact the Recertification Department to determine the exact amount of any past due fees and late fees owed.  You must include your payment with any other required material.  You may email this department at recertification@nbcc.org.

Lapsed NCCs
(Your certification expiration date has passed and you have not recertified.)

  1. Fill out the Reinstatement Application
  2. Pay the required fees (past due fees and late fees plus the current reinstatement fee of $85.00).
  3. Attach copies of continuing education documents.  You must document 100 hours of continuing education since your last recertification date.  If you do not have the required continuing education, you may elect to take the National Counselor Examination (NCE) instead.  Please see the section below "Re-taking the NCE for Reinstatement or Recertification."
  4. Mail the entire packet to: NBCC Recertification Department, P.O. Box 77698, Greensboro, NC  27417-7698
Not in Good Standing
NCCs whose credentials have not lapsed but are not in good standing due to non-payment of annual fees may simply pay the annual fee and the related fee.  Please send a copy of the "Late Fee Letter" that you received with the fee payment.

Inactive/Retired/Relinquished
(You currently hold a status of Retired-Inactive, Temporary-Inactive, or Relinquished and your certification(s) has not passed.)
  • Submit a letter of request for reinstatement (including your previous five-digit certification number).
  • Payment of any past due fees and late fees owed
If your NCC is active, but you relinquished your specialty credential and now would like to reactivate it, please contact the Recertification Department via email at recertification@nbcc.org or via telephone at (336) 547-0607.

Re-Taking the NCE for Reinstatement or Recertification
NCC's may opt to take the NCE for the purpose of  recertification in lieu of meeting the 100 hour continuing education requirement.  Specialty credential exams may also be taken in lieu of earning the required number of specialty contact hours.
