The Mental Health Access Improvement Act (S. 286/H.R. 945) has just been introduced in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. This legislation would allow counselors to serve Medicare beneficiaries. Currently, counselors cannot be reimbursed by Medicare. This means older and disabled adults using Medicare do not have access to counselors, even in rural areas where counselors are oftentimes the only mental health clinicians available.
Senators John Barrasso (R-WY) and Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) are the sponsors of the Senate bill and Reps. Mike Thompson (D-CA-5) and John Katko (R-NY-24) have introduced the House bill. NBCC’s Government and Legislative Affairs Department will lead the push for cosponsors of S. 286/H.R. 945. We need your help in this effort! Visit our Grassroots Action Center now to call and email your legislators and ask them to cosponsor the Mental Health Access Improvement Act (S. 286/ H.R. 945)!
