Advocacy for the Counseling Profession

NBCC actively promotes the counseling profession and credential holders on the national and state levels. NBCC offers guidance and support to leaders and individuals on specific state initiatives and also provides targeted outreach on critical advocacy issues. Recent activities include:

  • advocating to obtain a federal government Occupational Series for counselors to ensure full and equal employment within the Veterans Administration
  • working with Congress and the Administration to provide government funding for school counselors who have received national certification through NBCC
  • lobbying to remove the referral and supervision requirements for counselors under TRICARE
  • advocating for Medicare recognition of counselors
  • working with state advocates to pass licensure legislation for counselors in California
  • leading initiatives to ensure testing rights for counselors in all states
  • supporting counselor employment, reimbursement, and regulation policies in all states.

NBCC also assumes a lead position on testing issues through the Fair Access Coalition on Testing (FACT). For more about FACT, go to www.fairaccess.org.
