Register for a Military Health Systems Examination

The National Counselor Examination for Licensure and Certification (NCE) and the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE) are both used to determine eligibility for practice within the military health systems, specifically the Army Substance Abuse Program and TRICARE.

NBCC offers study guides for both the NCE and NCMHCE.

Army Substance Abuse Program

To register to take the NCMHCE for potential employment in the Army Abuse Program (ASAP), you will need to submit the Registration Form for the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE) for Professional Counselors Serving the Military Health Systems. Passing the examination does not guarantee eligibility for a particular position. (Please direct employment qualification questions to the contact person listed in a particular job announcement).

For more information, visit ASAP’s Web site.

TRICARE

To register to take the NCE or the NCMHCE for potential practice under TRICARE as a certified mental health counselor (TCMHC), you will need to submit either the Registration Form for the National Counselor Examination for Licensure and Certification (NCE) for Professional Counselors Serving the Military Health Systems or the Registration Form for the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE) for Professional Counselors Serving the Military Health Systems.

For more information or qualification questions, contact your TRICARE regional contractor.
