Benefits of National Certification with NBCC

The following includes some of the benefits of national certification through NBCC.

  • Use of NBCC Certification Marks
Current certificants may use the appropriate NBCC certification marks (e.g., NCC, etc.) after receiving notification that they have been certified by NBCC. This means that the marks may be used on the individual's professional business materials such as letterhead, Web sites, business cards, etc., as long as the individual maintains his or her certification in accordance with NBCC policies and procedures.

  • Access to Professional Counselor Liability Insurance at Reduced Rates
NBCC is committed to helping certificants locate quality professional liability insurance. NCCs are able to access the reduced rates of insurance through Lockton Affinity. This insurance is rated "Excellent" by A.M. Best.

Certificants may obtain free online quotes without providing sensitive personal information.

  • Access to Continuing Education through Psychology Today
Psychology Today has become a resource for both professional counselors and the public, providing timely information about relationships, family issues, well-being and emotional conditions. In that counseling works from a wellness model, the magazine's focus and content fit with the counseling profession.

NCCs are eligible to subscribe to the magazine at a reduced rate and have an opportunity to earn continuing education credits by reading the featured article(s) and completing the assessment. Psychology Today features at least two articles in each issue. The current price for the assessment is only $10. Furthermore, NCCs benefit from NBCC's collaboration with Psychology Today by having access to a free six-month trial of Psychology Today's Therapy Directory.

  • Reduced Cost of Testing Instruments Specifically Designed for Professional Counseling
As a result of collaboration between NBCC and the Institute for Personality and Ability Testing (IPAT), NCCs may purchase for a reduced fee psychological tests and interpretive reports developed with professional counselors in mind. The two assessment reports that are now available for NCCs are the Personal Career Development Profile Plus for Professional Counselors (PCDP-PC Plus) and the PsychEval Personality Questionnaire Interpretation for Professional Counselors (PEPQ-PC). Test manuals (required) also are available to NCCs at a discounted rate.

  • Eligibility for the National Health Service Corps Loan Repayment Program (NHSC LRP)
This program recruits mental health professionals to provide services to underserved populations located in selected health professional shortage areas (HPSAs) in rural and urban communities across the nation. In return, the NHSC LRP assists in the repayment of outstanding qualifying educational loans. Licensed counselors may qualify for this program by completing a qualifying master's degree, two years of postgraduate supervised counseling as well as certification through NBCC as a National Certified Counselor (NCC) or a Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor (CCMHC) and possession of a current, unencumbered license to practice independently.

  • Advocacy for the Profession
NBCC actively promotes the counseling profession and credential holders on the national and state levels. Advocacy efforts may include profession-specific activities and governmental relations. NBCC employees a lobbyist and maintains an office in Alexandria, Virginia, in order to support continued lobbying efforts.

  • Eligibility for Discounts for NBCC-Specific Functions
When possible, NBCC provides discounts to current NCCs on services offered by NBCC. For example, current NCCs currently receive a discount on certain exam registrations, score and certification verifications.
